Malaysia formulates a comprehensive trade strategy to shield its economy from external pressures linked to its firm stance on the Palestinian cause
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has formulated a comprehensive trade strategy to safeguard national economic stability from external pressures.
Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said the approach ensures Malaysia is prepared for any potential economic or political pressure resulting from its stance on Palestine.
“We will ensure that Wisma Putra continues to play its role in maintaining (strong diplomatic) relations with other countries…we also have a comprehensive trade strategy,” he told the Dewan Negara.
He was responding to Senator Datuk Prof Emeritus Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman, who cited Turkiye’s economic challenges as a cautionary tale.
Mohammad Redzuan had expressed concern over possible attempts to undermine Malaysia’s stability due to its stance on conflicts in the West Bank and Gaza.
Lukanisman stressed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s credibility is a key asset in bolstering Malaysia’s economic diplomacy.
The Foreign Ministry will work closely with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry to monitor and safeguard the country’s economic interests.
Lukanisman added that Malaysia will not participate in initiatives like the Board of Peace, which fail to address the root causes of the conflict.
The ministry is also closely monitoring the safety of Malaysians in countries affected by unrest in West Asia.
An official statement on the latest developments and security measures will be issued by the Foreign Ministry soon.
The government will continue to strengthen collective diplomatic pressure through the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and its international partners.
Responding to the original question, Lukanisman said Malaysia continues to actively pursue diplomatic initiatives at the UN and OIC.
These efforts aim to push for a lasting and comprehensive ceasefire despite a truce reached last October.
