Human Resources Minister R. Ramanan criticises opposition for not supporting the 10-year PM term limit bill, as the government plans to retable it in June.

KUALA LUMPUR: Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has expressed disappointment that the opposition did not support the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years.

He stated that the bill, which is part of the nation’s institutional reform agenda, should have received backing from all sides of the political divide.

“All parties should support efforts to advance and develop the nation and support the reforms being implemented by the MADANI Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” Ramanan told reporters after a breaking of fast event.

The bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, receiving 146 votes in favour while 44 MPs abstained and 32 were absent.

It fell short by two votes of the 148 needed for a constitutional amendment to pass.

MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the bill would be retabled in June following an agreement reached in a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister.

Ramanan made his comments at an event organised by the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), which was also attended by Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan and PERKESO Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed.

At the same event, Ramanan presented PERKESO corporate social responsibility contributions totalling more than RM500,000 to individuals and communities in need.

Over RM300,000 was channelled to 15 recipients under the agency’s LINDUNG Pekerja, LINDUNG Kerjaya, LINDUNG Kendiri and LINDUNG Kasih programmes.
