PKR deputy president urges stronger checks and balances for anti-corruption agency to boost public trust and institutional integrity.

KUALA LUMPUR: Stronger checks and balances are needed to ensure transparency and boost public confidence in Malaysia’s anti-corruption efforts.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar said this must include greater parliamentary oversight of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

She argued such oversight would not interfere with investigations but would help ensure governing laws evolve with higher standards.

“Regular reports to Parliament would allow people’s representatives to assess the commission’s work,” she said in a statement.

She suggested bodies like the Public Accounts Committee or a dedicated Parliamentary Special Select Committee could review policies and enforcement decisions.

Nurul Izzah stressed parliamentary oversight should not be viewed as an attack on anti-corruption efforts.

She described it instead as a step to strengthen integrity and transparency in fighting corruption.

“I have repeatedly raised the systemic risks arising from such concerns,” she said.

She added she would continue to support efforts to address these institutional challenges.

Accountability must be comprehensive to ensure national institutions remain credible.

Nurul Izzah said institutions must continue to gain public trust to function effectively.

“Government institutions must always demonstrate that they serve the interests of all Malaysians and the nation, not just a select few,” she stated.

She identified public trust as a key pillar for successful policy implementation and law enforcement.
