A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sumatra island late Saturday, with tremors felt in nearby areas but no tsunami potential reported

JAKARTA: A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Lebong Regency in Bengkulu province on Indonesia’s Sumatra island late Saturday night.

Tremors from the quake were also felt in several nearby areas, according to reports.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the quake at 11.58pm local time on Saturday.

Its epicentre was located on land approximately 64 kilometres west of Lebong.

The agency reported the quake occurred at coordinates 2.99 degrees South Latitude and 101.63 degrees East Longitude.

It struck at a depth of 47 kilometres.

BMKG stated the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

However, residents were advised to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks.
