Eddie Howe urges his Newcastle side to deliver a legendary performance in their biggest-ever game as they host Barcelona in the Champions League last 16.

EDDIE HOWE has challenged Newcastle United to produce the performance of a lifetime as they aim to win the “biggest game” in the club’s modern history against Barcelona on Tuesday.

Howe’s side will make only their second appearance in the Champions League last 16 when the Liga leaders arrive on Tyneside for a highly anticipated first leg clash. For the first time since the 2002-03 season, Newcastle are among the final 16 clubs in the competition.

“We’ve never been in this position in the Champions League before and it’s the best competition there is, so for obvious reasons it’s a massive game in our history,” Howe said. He emphasised the need for his team and their supporters to fully embrace the occasion.

Newcastle famously beat Barcelona 3-2 thanks to a Faustino Asprilla hat-trick in the clubs’ first Champions League meeting in 1997. That victory marked the peak of a brief spell as Premier League entertainers before decades of decline, including two relegations, under former owner Mike Ashley.

The club has enjoyed a dramatic renaissance since its Saudi-backed takeover in 2021. Last season ended a 56-year trophy drought with a League Cup final win over Liverpool, and this European run represents another landmark.

Beating the five-time European champions would be a monumental moment, especially as Newcastle’s domestic progress has stalled this season. They currently languish in 12th in the Premier League and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City on Saturday.

Howe has struggled to balance ambitions with financial rules that have restricted spending, and a gruelling schedule has taken its toll. The manager admitted his squad is stretched, having played 47 games this season, with 19 matches in the last 63 days.

“I don’t think we’ve got the strength at the moment to make loads of changes and keep the same strength in our performance,” Howe conceded. “We need to try to find some energy from somewhere that will elevate our performance to a level that we’ve not seen before this season.”

Despite their domestic struggles, Newcastle have won six Champions League games in a single campaign for the first time. Their European success has inspired supporters to chant about “taking over” the competition.

Newcastle have lost all four of their meetings with Barcelona since 1997, including a 2-1 home defeat in this season’s group stage. Defying the odds on Tuesday would give their fans more opportunities to serenade their heroes on the continent’s biggest stage.
