Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim pledges to keep subsidised RON95 fuel at RM1.99 per litre, aiming to shield the public from global price volatility and Middle East tensions

PUTRAJAYA: The government will exert maximum effort to maintain the price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre to avoid burdening the people, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking at an event with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, stated that domestic prices remain controlled through targeted subsidies despite rising global oil prices.

“The price of oil today, Brent crude per barrel has risen to 100 US dollars,” he said.

“We are still holding on at RM1.99 for RON95 and we will make every possible effort so as not to burden the rakyat.”

He made these remarks against the backdrop of heightened Middle East tensions following attacks between Israel, the United States, and Iran since late February.

Anwar emphasised that Malaysia disagrees with any acts of violence, particularly attempts to conquer or destabilise other nations.

“Malaysia does not agree with violence, does not agree with the greed for power and attempts to conquer or threaten other countries,” he stated.

He also expressed sympathy for Middle Eastern nations affected by the ongoing crisis involving Iran, the US, and Israel.

“I have contacted the Iranian Foreign Minister requesting that every effort be made to control the situation so that good relations between neighbouring Islamic countries remain strong,” Anwar said.

The Prime Minister further advised the public to plan their spending and practise frugality as a preparatory measure against potential global economic uncertainties.
