PUTRAJAYA: Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin pleaded not guilty to seven corruption and money laundering charges at the Sessions Court here today.
The 78-year-old Pagoh MP faces four counts of using his position to obtain bribes totalling RM232.5 million. The charges relate to the Jana Wibawa project and involve three companies and an individual.
The alleged offences occurred at the Prime Minister’s Office between March 1, 2020 and August 20, 2021. He was charged under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009.
If convicted, he faces up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Muhyiddin also faces three counts of receiving RM200 million in proceeds from illegal activities. The funds were allegedly deposited into Bersatu’s bank accounts between February 2021 and July 2022.
These charges fall under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. Conviction carries a maximum 15-year jail term and a substantial fine.
The prosecution team is led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin. The defence is led by senior lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik.
On October 7 last year, the Attorney General’s Chambers rejected Muhyiddin’s request to have all charges against him dropped.
