The Senate has unanimously passed a motion to amend its Standing Orders, aiming to strengthen executive accountability and enhance committee roles

KUALA LUMPUR: The Senate has unanimously approved a motion to amend several provisions within its Standing Orders.

The motion was tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and debated by four senators.

Azalina stated the proposed amendments follow a comprehensive review by the Standing Orders Committee held on Dec 18, 2025.

She said the changes aim to strengthen the principle of executive accountability to the Senate in line with the Parliamentary Services Act 2025.

The amendments also seek to enhance the role of select committees and ensure procedural consistency between both Houses of Parliament.

“The Senate Standing Orders Committee also noted and agreed that the existing special select committees will remain in force and continue their proceedings until the end of the 15th Parliament,” she said.

This continuation aligns with a motion the Senate approved on Dec 14, 2023, regarding the establishment of its special select committees.
