Australia grants asylum to Iranian women footballers who refused to sing their national anthem, citing fears of persecution if they returned home.

AUSTRALIA has granted humanitarian visas to members of Iran’s women’s national football team. The players sought asylum over fears of persecution for refusing to sing their national anthem before a match.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed he signed off on the applications. He stated the players are now safe and welcome to stay in Australia.

Five players reportedly left their team hotel on the Gold Coast overnight. They were moved to a safe location by Australian police before lodging their claims.

The gesture of not singing the anthem was widely seen as an act of defiance against Iran’s government. A state TV presenter had branded the players “wartime traitors” for the silent protest.

In subsequent matches, the players did salute and sing. Their initial act, however, sparked international calls for their protection.

US President Donald Trump said he spoke with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about the situation. Trump noted some players felt compelled to return due to fears for their families’ safety.

The son of Iran’s late shah, Reza Pahlavi, warned the protest could have “dire consequences”. He urged Australia to offer the team protection.

Politicians, human rights activists, and author J.K. Rowling also called for official protection. Rowling posted on social media pleading, “Please, protect these young women.”

Crowds gathered outside the Gold Coast stadium during the team’s last match. Protesters chanted “let them go” and “save our girls” while surrounding the team bus.

Amnesty International campaigner Zaki Haidari said the women risked severe punishment if sent home. He suggested their families may have already been threatened.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the country “stands in solidarity” with the people of Iran. The Iranian embassy in Australia did not respond to requests for comment.
