Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif unveils austerity steps including 50% fuel cuts for government vehicles, four-day work weeks and school closures to address the crisis.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a series of austerity and fuel-saving measures to address a crisis triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Addressing the nation, Sharif said fuel allocations for government department vehicles will be cut by 50% for the next two months. He added that 60% of these vehicles will be taken out of service entirely.

The prime minister also announced that 50% of staff in both public and private sectors would work from home, except for those in essential services. Government offices will now operate four days a week.

All schools across the country will be closed for two weeks starting at the end of the current week. This forms a key part of the government’s energy conservation strategy.

Sharif warned traders against hoarding essential commodities to exploit the situation. He urged the nation to demonstrate unity and responsibility in dealing with the crisis.
