Sirens blared in Jerusalem as Israeli defences intercepted Iranian missiles, with no immediate casualties reported but escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.

JERUSALEM: Air raid sirens sounded across Jerusalem and central Israel on Tuesday following a military warning of incoming missiles from Iran.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that defensive systems were actively operating to intercept the aerial threat.

AFP journalists in Jerusalem reported hearing at least one large blast shortly after the alert was issued.

The Magen David Adom emergency service stated there were no immediate injuries from the missile fire itself.

It added that its teams were, however, treating a small number of people injured while heading to shelters and others suffering from anxiety.

First responders have reported that 11 people have been killed and dozens injured in Israel since Iran began its retaliatory missile campaign.

This followed joint US-Israeli strikes that initiated the current phase of hostilities 11 days ago.

On Monday, shrapnel from an intercepted missile killed one man and seriously wounded another in central Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Tuesday that Israel’s military offensive against Iran was “not done yet”.

His statement came after US President Donald Trump insisted the conflict would be over “soon”.
