Penang police investigate preacher Zamri Vinoth for alleged racial and provocative remarks in a TikTok live video
PETALING JAYA: Penang police have launched an investigation into controversial preacher Zamri Vinoth following a TikTok live video in which he allegedly made threatening, provocative, insulting, and racially charged remarks.
Penang police chief Azizee Ismail confirmed the probe was initiated after a police report was lodged on March 8 in connection with the video. Zamri is being investigated on three fronts — sedition, intentional insult likely to provoke a breach of the peace, and online abuse.
In an official statement, Azizee cautioned the public against making inflammatory statements, circulating unverified information, or posting provocative content and speculation that could stir hostility between racial or community groups. He stressed that the police viewed the matter with utmost seriousness, underscoring the force’s commitment to preserving racial harmony and public order in Malaysia’s multiracial society.
In a related development, Azizee also announced that four additional men were arrested in Bukit Mertajam at approximately 2.30am today in connection with an alleged earlier attack on Zamri himself.
Zamri had previously claimed he was threatened and that his vehicle was damaged in Bukit Mertajam on March 7. The four newly arrested suspects, aged between 29 and 31, bring the total number of individuals detained in relation to that incident to six.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, and Section 427 for mischief causing damage to property. All suspects have been remanded for two days, with their remand period expiring tomorrow.
