Mohamad Yusof leads Malaysia’s para cycling squad to Glasgow 2026, aiming for a strong showing despite tough competition for medals.
KUALA LUMPUR: World champion Mohamad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin (pic) will spearhead Malaysia’s para cycling challenge at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) Para Bureau deputy head, Ramlay Ibrahim, confirmed the squad’s participation while acknowledging the difficulty of securing a medal.
“We got a slot to go to the Commonwealth Games but it will be quite difficult to get a medal because the competition is expected to be fierce,” he said.
Ramlay stated that the 28-year-old Mohamad Yusof will be joined by another rider and two pairs of male and female tandem cyclists.
This brings the total to three events for the national team at the Games.
“Our standard is more or less, but they (other Commonwealth countries) may be a little better than us,” he added after a Working Committee Meeting at the National Sports Council.
He explained that athlete selection was based on current performance, including achievements at recent international championships like the World Championships.
The national para cycling squad is currently undergoing training at the Malaysian National Velodrome in Nilai.
Events contested will include the tandem sprint, one kilometre tandem time trial, 1km time trial C1-3, and the C1-3 individual pursuit for men and women.
The para cycling competition is scheduled from July 30 to August 2.
It will be held at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.
