The Sabah government is assessing 17 sports complexes and stadiums for safety and comfort upgrades, with urgent repairs needed at Penampang Stadium’s running track.
THE Sabah State Government is studying the need to upgrade approximately 17 sports complexes and stadiums across the state. This follows a series of visits to assess the maintenance and condition of existing facilities.
Youth Development, Sports and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said the initiative aims to ensure facilities are safe and comfortable for public use. He highlighted the running track at Penampang Stadium as requiring urgent repair and upgrading due to its dilapidated condition.
“The estimated cost has yet to be determined and is still under evaluation,” Nizam told reporters. He has requested ministry officers to conduct assessments and prepare cost estimates for a funding proposal to the government.
These repairs aim to ensure the Penampang Stadium track is safe for athletes and the public. Nizam commented further on his inspections of three other complexes requiring work.
He has so far inspected the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex, Penampang Sports Complex and Sandakan Sports Complex. All three require maintenance and upgrading works.
Nizam also inspected the unfinished Tongod Sports Complex. The ministry has terminated the contract of the previous contractor and will offer the project to a new company.
