Malaysia is expanding cooperation with Europe’s top ITS bodies to develop a smarter, data-driven transport ecosystem, leveraging expertise in AI and digital traffic management.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is strengthening strategic cooperation with leading European Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) organisations to accelerate the development of its smart mobility ecosystem.

The initiative was a key focus during an engagement session led by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi with key European bodies at the Intertraffic Amsterdam 2026 event.

Nanta held discussions with ERTICO-ITS Europe, ITS Germany, and Connekt/ITS Netherlands on the latest intelligent transport technologies and potential collaboration areas.

The Works Ministry stated that this engagement reflects Malaysia’s commitment to building international partnerships for a technology-enabled transport future.

“Malaysia values the opportunity to learn from Europe’s experience in implementing smart mobility solutions while building strong partnerships among governments, industry and research institutions,” the ministry said.

Discussions with ERTICO-ITS Europe centred on strengthening cooperation through research, knowledge-sharing platforms, and capacity-building initiatives.

ERTICO also introduced its ERTICO Academy, which offers specialised training that could be tailored to support Malaysia’s institutional development in ITS.

In a separate meeting, ITS Germany shared its experience in developing digital transport infrastructure and smart mobility governance.

A key focus area is Germany’s Artificial Intelligence and Mobility (AIAMO) initiative, a research programme integrating AI, environmental data, and mobility management.

“This initiative brings together 14 research and industry partners to develop artificial intelligence-based solutions that support more efficient, safer and environmentally responsive mobility systems,” the statement added.

Discussions with Connekt/ITS Netherlands highlighted the country’s leadership in sustainable mobility and integrated traffic management through collaborative platforms.

Minister Nanta also invited these international partners to participate in major mobility and infrastructure events in Malaysia during Visit Malaysia 2026.

These events include the Malaysian Roads Maintenance Convention under the MY ASEAN Roads and Traffic Tech Expo (MYARTTE) 2026 from September 30 to October 2.

The Malaysia Road Conference 2026, scheduled for October 13 to 15, is another key platform for international collaboration.
