SULAIMANIYAH: A drone strike in Iraq’s Kurdistan region killed a member of an Iranian Kurdish armed opposition group. The exiled Komala party blamed the attack on Iran.
At least eight drones targeted the party’s positions, killing one fighter. Two other fighters were wounded in the two-wave attack.
Komala senior official Ali Ranjder said the strike hit the Zrgwezala region near Sulaimaniyah. He attributed the assault directly to Iran.
“This is the most violent attack against our bases since the beginning of the war,” another Komala official told AFP anonymously. The official noted drones were still flying over the area.
The attack follows a massive US and Israeli campaign against Iran launched on February 28. That campaign has since sparked a wider regional war.
Iran has repeatedly struck Kurdish militant positions in Iraq since the conflict began. Tehran accuses these groups of serving Western or Israeli interests.
A Komala fighter was also killed in an attack in the Sulaimaniyah region last week. The Komala party was founded in 1969 by students and intellectuals in Tehran and Kurdish cities.
Kurdish rebel groups have historically clashed with Iranian security forces in border areas. In recent years, they have drastically limited military activities under political pressure from Iraqi hosts.
