Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah chairs a new committee to coordinate energy security planning and evaluate the conflict’s effects, with findings due at a special cabinet meeting this Friday.

PUTRAJAYA: Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan chaired the inaugural meeting of the Special Committee on Energy Security and the Impact of West Asia Conflict today.

He stated that the committee was formed to coordinate government actions on energy security planning and assess the impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Its primary focus is ensuring the continued safeguarding of the people’s interests and well-being.

The committee involves the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry and Bank Negara Malaysia.

“The results of this committee’s discussions will be presented at the Special Cabinet Meeting on March 13, 2026 as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today,” he said in a social media post.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim earlier announced the government would establish the special committee to study the impact of the US-Iran conflict on the national economy.

He confirmed that Amir Hamzah would chair the committee and make assessments alongside Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and other relevant ministers.

Tensions in West Asia have remained high since February 28 when Israel and the US launched attacks on Iran, which later triggered a counterattack by Tehran on US interests in the Gulf.

This situation raises concerns about the stability of global trade routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz.

The narrow strait between Iran and Oman is one of the world’s most important shipping lanes for oil and gas.

A large portion of global energy supplies passes through the area every day, meaning any conflict there could impact energy markets, logistics costs and the global economy.
