A special committee to curb smuggling of subsidised goods has been reactivated, with a focus on integrated enforcement and border control amid regional tensions

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has reactivated a special committee to strengthen monitoring and enforcement against the smuggling of subsidised controlled goods.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the move aims to formulate a more integrated approach to curb smuggling risks, particularly following the West Asia conflict.

The committee is chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and is scheduled to meet next Monday.

Armizan explained that the committee previously addressed enforcement issues related to smuggling and misappropriation in Sabah and Sarawak.

“The meeting next Monday will look at approaches and strategies to curb smuggling across our borders to ensure that the subsidies provided can benefit our people,” he told a press conference.

He said monitoring needs to be strengthened as price gaps, especially for subsidised fuel, could increase smuggling risks.

These gaps exist between domestic subsidised prices, industrial prices, and prices in neighbouring countries.

Enforcement operations will involve multiple agencies including KPDN, border control agencies, and the Customs Department.

Armizan also called for cooperation from non-governmental organisations and local communities to report smuggling activities.

In a related development, he assured the public that nationwide fuel supply remains sufficient.

Tensions in West Asia have escalated since February 28 following attacks by Israel and the US on Iran, and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes.
