A Malaysian woman slams a Bazaar Ramadan Nilai trader after her RM9 nasi tomato allegedly tasted of rose syrup

A woman has taken to Threads.com to express her disappointment about a trader at Bazaar Ramadan Nilai after her RM9 plate of nasi tomato allegedly tasted nothing like the dish it was sold as — with the rice described as sweet, rose syrup-flavoured and entirely lacking the savoury characteristics of a proper nasi tomato.

The woman explained that she had purchased the meal specifically at her child’s request, only to find that what arrived had little resemblance to nasi tomato either in appearance or taste.

“Seriously, this is how you do business?” she wrote in her post, which was accompanied by photos of the dish.

Her frustration was detailed and pointed. Beyond the visual letdown visible in the photos she shared, the woman said she could not manage even a single mouthful of the rice.

“It doesn’t have any tomato DNA or any characteristics of nasi tomato. It’s sirap rose-flavoured rice,” she wrote.

The complaints extended to the side dishes as well. The chicken was described as tough and difficult to eat, while the kuah tasted more like a dessert than a savoury accompaniment — reminiscent, she said, of the sweet syrup used in murtabak side dishes – vinegar-soaked onions.

The chilli, she added, was served uncooked, and an unmistakable sweetness from the sirap.

What made the experience sting more, the woman noted, was the context of Ramadan itself — a time when customers are hungry, time before iftar is limited, and trust in food traders runs high.

“It’s not right to run a business like this when people are fasting. Customers pay for the food, not to throw it away,” she said.

Her post drew a wave of responses, including at least one commenter who claimed to have encountered the very same problem at the same stall.

“My child also bought it during the second week of Ramadan. After two mouthfuls, couldn’t continue. I thought the seller made a mistake that day, but it looks like it has been the same for weeks,” the commenter wrote.
