Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim orders immediate solutions for Sarawak’s flooding and water supply, stressing federal-state cooperation on the state’s critical infrastructure.
KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for immediate solutions to address chronic flooding and water supply issues in Sarawak.
He has directed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) to adopt a comprehensive approach. Anwar noted that funding has already been allocated for nearly all related projects.
The directive was issued during a meeting in Kuching today with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the state’s leadership. The discussions covered Sarawak’s development agenda, economic strengthening, and enhancing federal-state cooperation.
“I was also briefed on the need to resolve the flood and water supply issues in Sarawak,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.
He described the meeting as part of a nationwide series of dialogues with state governments. These are based on the principle that sustainable development must start by listening to the people’s needs in each state.
“Such open dialogues are important as a platform to refine and address the needs of communities in the states, rather than merely fulfilling bureaucratic requirements,” he stated.
Beyond domestic issues, Anwar also updated the Sarawak leadership on the conflict in West Asia. He shared details of discussions with leaders from several Gulf countries, Iran, and Turkiye, who contacted Malaysia to exchange views.
He expressed honour that these nations were willing to hear Malaysia’s perspective, given its relatively small international standing. “I conveyed several views on behalf of Malaysia while emphasising the importance of easing tensions for the sake of global peace,” he added.
