Sarawak implements price ceilings on 23 key Aidilfitri goods under the SHMMP scheme from March 14 to 28 to curb inflation and protect consumers

KUCHING: The government has placed 23 essential items under the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme for Aidilfitri in Sarawak. The price controls are effective from today until March 28.

Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the listed items include high-demand goods like chicken wings, imported beef, and large yellow onions. The selection also covers imported round cabbage and dried red chillies.

“The selection of items, determination of maximum prices, and the scheme’s duration are based on several factors,” she said. She cited supply availability, current costs, and weather conditions as key considerations.

The ministry also incorporated feedback from strategic partners like the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry. Fuziah stated this after visiting a supermarket in Kota Samarahan today.

Nationwide, a total of 27 items have been identified under the maximum price scheme. The number of controlled items varies by region across the country.

In Peninsular Malaysia, 24 items are listed under the scheme. Sabah and Sarawak each have 23 controlled items, while the Federal Territory of Labuan has 22.

The scheme will run for 15 days in total. This period covers seven days before the festival, the first day of Aidilfitri, and seven days after.

Fuziah said enforcement officers nationwide will conduct inspections to ensure trader compliance. Monitoring will focus on strategic locations like public markets and shopping centres.

“These measures are crucial to safeguard consumers’ rights and prevent breaches of the established regulations,” she said.
