North Korea tested a new nuclear-capable rocket launcher system, with Kim Jong Un stating it would cause unease for enemies within a 420 km range.
SEOUL: North Korea has conducted a test of its nuclear-capable multiple rocket launcher system, state media reported.
The test involved twelve 600mm-calibre rocket launchers and was personally overseen by leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday.
Kim stated the drill would give Pyongyang’s enemies “within the 420 km striking range” a sense of “uneasiness”. He also said it demonstrated “the destructive power of tactical nuclear weapon”.
The Korean Central News Agency reported the rockets struck an island target in the East Sea more than 360 kilometres away. Kim praised the weapon system as a “very deadly yet attractive weapon”.
Photos released by state media showed several rockets launching from large vehicles. Another picture depicted Kim and his daughter, Ju Ae, watching the launch from a distance.
South Korea’s military confirmed it detected multiple launches from the North into the East Sea. Seoul’s presidential office condemned the launches as a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The test occurred just days after South Korean and US forces began their annual “Freedom Shield” spring military drills. Those exercises involve about 18,000 troops and will run until March 19.
Kim’s powerful sister, Kim Yo Jong, recently warned the joint drills “may cause unimaginably terrible consequences”. She said they were happening as global security rapidly deteriorates.
The launch also followed remarks by South Korea’s prime minister that US President Donald Trump is open to a meeting with Kim Jong Un. The Trump administration has sought to revive high-level talks with Pyongyang in recent months.
