Federal government provides RM10,000 aid to traders affected by fire at Pasar Sentral Labuan wet market

LABUAN: The federal government has distributed disaster aid to eight traders affected by a fire that destroyed several vegetable stalls at Pasar Sentral here.

The RM10,000 in assistance was presented during a visit by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh to the site to meet affected traders and assess the damage.

The fire, which occurred around midnight on March 13, involved eight vegetable sales tables located in the wet market section of the Pasar Sentral building beneath the Labuan Urban Transformation Centre (UTC).

Hannah said the contribution reflects the government’s concern for the welfare of small traders. She expressed hope the aid would help them recover from their losses.

“Government and local authorities will continue to support traders affected by unexpected incidents like this,” she said during the visit, which was also attended by her deputy Datuk Lo Su Fui and officials from the Labuan Corporation (LC).

LC, which manages the Pasar Sentral building, will carry out repair and maintenance work to restore the damaged facilities. This is to ensure the comfort and safety of traders and the public.

Previously, LC announced a 50% reduction in the monthly rental rate for traders operating in the UTC Labuan wet and dry market at Pasar Sentral. The measure benefits 517 traders.

The rental reduction, implemented for a one-year period from January 1 to December 31, 2026, involves stalls with monthly rents ranging from RM35 to RM3,500. It aims to ease traders’ financial burdens while stimulating economic activity in the local community.
