A construction worker was injured after being assaulted by a group of men in Melaka, allegedly over a motorcycle theft arrest.

TANGGA BATU: A 24-year-old construction worker was injured after being allegedly assaulted by a group of men along Jalan Tangga Batu near the Ar-Rabbani Mosque here.

Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the incident occurred at about 4 am today when the victim was confronted by a man who accused him of causing his younger brother to be arrested in a motorcycle theft case.

The suspect and several accomplices encircled the victim before striking his right shoulder with a helmet, while others chased him and attempted to hit him with it.

The victim was also struck on the head with a stick before members of the public intervened to stop the assault.

Dzulkhairi added that a video recording believed to be of the incident had gone viral on Facebook, although no arrests had been made so far despite the suspects being identified.

The injured victim has been allowed to return home after receiving treatment, with the case being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code.
