China provides Cambodia with equipment to boost its fight against online scams, supporting a nationwide crackdown and enhanced bilateral security cooperation.
PHNOM PENH: China has provided specialised equipment to Cambodia’s Commission for Combating Online Scams to increase the effectiveness of its fight against cybercrime.
Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin handed over the materials to Cambodian senior minister Chhay Sinarith, the head of the CCOS secretariat, during a ceremony on Monday.
Sinarith described the donation from China’s Public Security Ministry as a “valuable gift” for the kingdom’s law enforcement efforts.
“These materials will be important tools for our law enforcement officers to use in combating and suppressing cyber scams more effectively,” he stated.
He emphasised that cybercrime is a complex regional and global problem requiring strong international cooperation to combat.
Sinarith highlighted the close collaboration between Cambodian and Chinese authorities within their security cooperation framework, which has already yielded commendable results in fighting various crimes, especially online scams.
He expressed a strong hope that the excellent bilateral cooperation would continue to grow stronger to ensure security and public order for both nations and the wider region.
Ambassador Wang said China was pleased to assist Cambodia and praised the kingdom for achieving remarkable results in its recent crackdown on cyber scams.
He commended the Cambodian government for approving a draft law on combating online scams last Friday, saying that “this truly reflects Cambodia’s high commitment to wipe out all online scam networks from the country.”
Cambodia has launched an unprecedented nationwide operation against cyber scam networks to maintain social security and restore the kingdom’s international image.
The Cambodian government is committed to eradicating all online scam centres in the country by April this year.
Cambodian Interior Minister Sar Sokha recently stated that the kingdom had deported more than 30,000 suspected foreign scammers.
He added that over 210,000 others had voluntarily left Cambodia after operations against online scams intensified since June last year.
