PUTRAJAYA: Vehicle owners with road tax expired for over five years are urged to dispose of their cars legally through the e-Dereg system. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this allows for a partial refund and helps prevent vehicles from being abandoned on roadsides.
He warned that improperly disposed vehicles expose owners to legal risks. These risks include potential theft or modification by third parties.
“First of all, owners have the responsibility to dispose of their vehicles, and we have now made the process easier through the e-Dereg system,” Loke said at a press conference. He added that a long-term policy is being formulated for more effective management of unused vehicles.
The Online Motor Vehicle Registration Cancellation System (e-Dereg) was introduced by JPJ to tackle dilapidated and abandoned vehicles. It simplifies the deregistration process without requiring owners to visit JPJ offices.
Loke also encouraged sending vehicles to an Authorised Automotive Treatment Facility (AATF) for disposal. He said this ensures proper legal procedures and allows owners to recover some value.
“It is a legal process, and owners will receive payment based on the vehicle’s value,” he explained. He noted that AATFs provide towing services for non-functional vehicles.
Loke acknowledged that the nationwide number of AATF facilities is still limited. He confirmed the system is operational and has been promoted multiple times.
