A roadside sushi stall in Kuala Lumpur faces backlash over hygiene concerns, with netizens warning of food safety risks linked to improper handling of raw seafood.

WHILE sushi remains a popular favourite, especially in Malaysia — where it is even sold at roadside stalls — its preparation requires careful consideration, as most sushi-related ingredients contains raw seafood.

Recently, a roadside stall in Kuala Lumpur selling sushi faced backlash over questionable food hygiene practices.

Quoting a food review post on Threads, a Malaysian woman criticised the page as “irresponsible” for promoting an “obvious health hazard”.

In the video shared by the food-focused page, sellers were seen preparing slices of raw fish to place on top of sushi rice.

One of the workers claimed that the sushi was “freshly made every day”, as the fish was “cut in front of customers”.

Netizens criticised the stall for unsafe food preparation practices, with many citing proper guidelines for sushi handling.

“An authentic sushi maker in Langkawi said that sushi needs to be handled in an air-conditioned environment, not in open-air settings, where bacteria can spread easily and cause food poisoning. This is wrong on so many levels,” one user pointed out.

“The stall operator has committed a serious violation of Malaysian laws. Preparing raw fish (sashimi/sushi) in a roadside environment without strict temperature control, along with poor personal hygiene, is a high-risk activity that breaches almost all Critical Control Points (CCPs) in food safety,” noted another.

“This is a clear example of why all content creators, especially those filming food content, should have at least basic knowledge of safe food handling. At the very least, they would not blindly film and promote something like this,” another added.
