PROTON has launched the 2026 Proton X90 MC1, marking the first update for the three-row SUV since it was introduced in Malaysia in May 2023. The refreshed model arrives with a revised powertrain, a simplified variant lineup and significantly lower pricing.

The 2026 Proton X90 MC1 is offered in three variants, with launch pricing after rebate as follows (on-the-road, without insurance):

Proton X90 1.5TD Lite (7-seater) – RM 99,800

Proton X90 1.5TD Prime (7-seater) – RM 109,800

Proton X90 1.5TD Prime X (6-seater) – RM 115,800

Compared to the previous range, the updated X90 is now up to RM 37,000 cheaper, with the previous Flagship variant previously priced at RM 152,800.

Despite being a mid-cycle update, the X90 MC1 remains visually almost unchanged. The SUV retains the same chrome pin grille, full LED headlamps with L-shaped daytime running lights and overall body design as before.

All variants now ride on 18-inch alloy wheels, as the previous 19-inch option has been discontinued. The updated model also switches tyre supplier, moving from the Continental EcoContact 6 previously used to Giti Control P10 tyres.

The biggest change for the X90 MC1 comes under the bonnet. The SUV now adopts Proton’s BHE15-EFZ 1.5 litre i-GT turbocharged four-cylinder engine, replacing the previous GEP3 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder unit with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The new engine produces 181 PS at 5,500 rpm and 290 Nm from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm, paired with a retuned 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. While the output figures are slightly lower than the outgoing powertrain, which produced 190 PS and 300 Nm, Proton says the newer engine delivers improved refinement, lower maintenance costs and better efficiency.

The X90 MC1 continues to use a rear multi-link suspension setup, which Proton developed and tuned specifically for Malaysian road conditions.

Inside, much of the cabin layout has been carried over from before, although there are several equipment updates. Leatherette seats are now standard across the range, replacing the fabric seats previously found on the entry-level variant. The 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen remains standard and now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across all variants.

Other familiar features include dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents for all rows, the air purification system with N95 cabin filter and ioniser, and seven USB ports distributed across the three rows. Boot space remains unchanged at 257 litres with all seats in place, expanding to 2,050 litres with the second and third rows folded.

The base Lite variant retains an analogue instrument cluster, while the Prime and Prime X gain a 10.3-inch digital instrument display. Moving up to the Prime also adds features such as automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 360-degree HD camera with 180-degree transparent view, tyre pressure monitoring and front parking sensors.

At the top of the range, the Prime X adopts a six-seat 2-2-2 layout with second-row captain seats, along with Nappa leather upholstery, a four-way power adjustable front passenger seat and a front passenger boss switch that allows the front seat to be moved forward to provide additional legroom for the second-row occupant behind it. The second-row captain seats also retain their ventilation function.

Several features available on the previous range have been removed as part of the repositioning of the X90. These include the panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charger, powered tailgate and 4G/WiFi connectivity. More notably, ADAS driver assistance systems have also been removed entirely from the MC1 lineup.

Exterior colour options have been revised, with the palette now consisting of Quartz Black, Marine Blue, Armour Silver, Snow White and Jet Grey, while Cinnamon Brown and Ruby Red from the previous range have been dropped. Inside, the cabin is available only with a black interior, offered in either leatherette or Nappa leather depending on the variant.

Proton is also offering a range of ownership packages under its Pro Series customer programme. This includes Pro-Warranty, which provides a five-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty and five years of free labour service.

Buyers can also opt for Pro-Finance, offering financing tenure of up to nine years with interest rates starting from 1.95% per annum, while Pro-Xchange and Pro-Trade-In programmes provide additional trade-in support, with the latter offering overtrade assistance of up to RM3,000.

Additionally, Proton is introducing Pro-Shield, an enhanced insurance programme that provides additional protection coverage including accident protection for both driver and passengers as well as flood assistance support.
