National mixed doubles player Toh Ee Wei says her fighting spirit is crucial to competing with the world’s top 10 pairs, focusing on consistency over rushing success.
NATIONAL mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei believes her fighting spirit is the key weapon in staying competitive among the world’s top pairs.
The 24-year-old acknowledged a gap in experience compared to more seasoned opponents. She said this serves as motivation to raise her game rather than hold her back.
“I may not be as experienced as they are, but I always give my best in every match and every point,” she said after a training session at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia. She added that fighting spirit on court is her greatest strength.
Ee Wei is not rushing to chase immediate success on the international stage. She is choosing instead to focus on building consistency with her partner Chen Tang Jie.
Reflecting on their early exit at the All England two weeks ago, Ee Wei said the defeat served as a reminder. She stressed that they cannot take any tournament lightly, even as world champions.
She said they accepted the result with an open mind, having given their all throughout the match. “We cannot use experience as an excuse,” she added.
“I need to learn from every match and tournament. Even in defeat, we showed fighting spirit as we did at the All England.”
Ee Wei, currently ranked world number four with Tang Jie, noted the mixed doubles field is very open now. She pointed out that champions have come from Taiwan and many top players have been losing recently.
