Police anticipate heavy traffic in Gua Musang as people return for Aidilfitri, with congestion stretching over 20km due to breakdowns on key routes.
GUA MUSANG: Police are expecting traffic volume in Gua Musang to rise until tonight due to an influx of people returning to celebrate Aidilfitri.
Gua Musang district police chief Supt Sik Choon Foo said vehicles from the Klang Valley are still entering the district in large numbers.
He reported that traffic congestion at the border area of Merapoh, Pahang and Kampung Mentara has exceeded 20 kilometres.
This is due to several broken-down vehicles along Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis.
“Personnel on duty, assisted by the public, are attending to the vehicles to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents to other motorists,” he said.
He added that police are closely monitoring the situation and carrying out traffic dispersals to reduce congestion.
Checks as of 5 pm revealed increased traffic volume along Kampung Lepan Jaya near Kampung Meranto.
Traffic is also slow from Dewan Kompleks Perdana Majlis Daerah Gua Musang to the Bendahara traffic light junction.
Slow traffic persists along the entire stretch of Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai.
Motorist Siti Noraini Ghazali, 37, from Gombak, said she planned her return a day early to avoid congestion.
She still encountered a jam at the Pahang border heading to Kelantan.
“The jam was because a motorist had to stop by the roadside as their vehicle encountered some difficulty,” she shared.
She chose this route as it was nearer than the East Coast Highway, expecting a smooth journey to Kuala Krai.
“This is turning out to be tiring and exhausting due to the hot weather,” she added.
