A Pahang contractor lost over RM300,000 in a fraudulent online investment scheme that promised high returns before the website vanished.
TEMERLOH: A contractor lost RM356,342 after falling victim to a non-existent investment scheme advertised online.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 34-year-old victim saw the advertisement on Google on Feb 18 via a website called “marinasand”.
The victim registered for the scheme, which promised returns of 10% on the total investment.
He then made 16 money transfers from his personal savings and company funds into five different bank accounts between Feb 18 and March 19.
Yahaya said the victim only received an initial return of around RM1,000 before the promised profits stopped.
The victim later found he could no longer access the investment website and realised he had been scammed.
The police chief advised the public to seek early advice from their nearest police station before making any investments.
He also urged people to check account numbers via the police’s Semak Mule website before any financial transaction.
The public should immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997 if they suspect they have been defrauded.
