PDP grassroots divisions endorse president Tiong King Sing to helm the party into the upcoming Sarawak State Elections

KUCHING: Grassroots divisions of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) are throwing their full weight behind party president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, endorsing him to continue leading the party into the upcoming Sarawak State Elections.

The endorsements are emerging from Triennial General Assembly (TGA) meetings being held at the divisional level across the state ahead of the anticipated polls.

PDP is a component party of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government, alongside Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP), and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).

Batu Lintang PDP divisional chairman Ang Teck Chai said Tiong was endorsed without challenge at the recent divisional TGA meetings, with incumbent state assemblymen also retaining their positions in the party’s top leadership structure.

Ang said Tiong’s experience and influence made him the right person to steer PDP and GPS to a strong showing at the state polls.

“We at the divisional level endorse the party president to lead the party into the State Elections and later into the coming national elections. He will strengthen the party’s influence at both state and national levels,” he said.

Ang added that divisional-level election machinery would be mobilised following the conclusion of the TGA meetings.

PDP currently holds eight of Sarawak’s 82 state constituencies.

Meanwhile, political observers and party insiders are pointing to a possible state election call shortly after the Gawai Dayak festivities in June. GPS sources suggest the ruling coalition may dissolve the State Legislative Assembly in early July, which would allow polling to be held within July or by early August. The current state assembly term is due to expire on December 18, 2026.

“The GPS will not wait until the very last moment to call for the polls. The present political situation in Sarawak is stable enough for GPS to return with a good majority,” a source said, adding that the Gawai Dayak celebrations were expected to generate a positive mood among the Dayak community, who form the majority of voters in the state.

GPS currently commands a dominant position in the State Legislative Assembly, holding 80 of the 82 seats. The remaining two seats — Padungan and Pending — are held by Sarawak DAP. The coalition has also been ramping up grassroots-level projects and rolling out substantial financial allocations ahead of the anticipated polls.
