Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof assures stable energy supply amid global uncertainty, citing Petronas contingency plans and ongoing fuel subsidies
KUCHING: The Federal Government has assured that the country’s energy supply remains stable despite global uncertainties stemming from conflicts in West Asia.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has formulated alternative plans to ensure supply continuity if key routes like the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted.
“The government continues to bear large fuel subsidies to ensure that prices remain stable and do not burden the people despite rising global market prices,” he told reporters at a community event here.
Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, attributed the current stability to early planning and the diversification of supply sources.
He noted that price differences with neighbouring countries have led to fuel smuggling, causing national losses and affecting domestic supplies.
Close monitoring will be enhanced to ensure sufficient domestic supply and regulatory compliance by all industry players, he added.
Addressing another issue, Fadillah said the country is facing uncertain weather due to the monsoon transition, leading to hotter, drier conditions that could cause drought.
The government is closely monitoring water supply with state providers to ensure sufficiency, he stated.
“So far, the water supply situation is still under control, but continuous monitoring measures will be implemented to deal with any eventuality,” he said.
Immediate measures like water delivery via tanker trucks and reservoir monitoring will be implemented if shortages occur, ensuring supply reaches consumers.
