Malaysia’s geostrategic position and tech sector strength, including semiconductors and rare earths, boost its global significance amid geopolitical shifts.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s unique geostrategic position and strength in critical technology sectors have significantly enhanced the country’s strategic value on the international stage.

National Security Council director-general Datuk Raja Nurshirwan Zainal Abidin said these developments make Malaysia increasingly relevant amid prolonged global geopolitical uncertainties.

He noted the country now draws attention from major powers vested in international stability, reshaping its security approach for a complex new era.

“An estimated 30 to 40% of international oil trade passes through Malaysian waters, making the country a vital artery in the global energy supply chain,” he told Bernama.

He added that Malaysia’s dominance in the global semiconductor supply chain and strong potential in rare earth elements production also places it on the radar of major powers.

Raja Nurshirwan outlined four key factors contributing to this increased value.

Malaysia is uniquely positioned as the only country bordering two critical trade routes, the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea.

Projections that Southeast Asia will become a global growth centre over the next 30 to 40 years also benefit Malaysia at the region’s heart.

“This position opens up opportunities for Malaysia to play a more constructive and balanced role in international relations,” he said.

These advantages, combined with critical technology capabilities, directly influence national security dimensions beyond physical borders.

“The development of AI introduces a new dimension in security, as for the first time in human history, we have something capable of creating,” he explained.

He said this fundamentally changes the landscape of both international and domestic security.

Commenting on evolving threats, Raja Nurshirwan said the current landscape is far more complex with the emergence of hybrid warfare.

Modern threats now encompass the “grey zone”, including mind conditioning, cyberattacks and the exploitation of AI.

On MKN’s role, he stressed the agency operates at the policy and strategic coordination level to ensure all enforcement agencies move in an organised manner.

Under the National Security Council Act 2016, the director-general’s primary duty is to collect, correlate and coordinate intelligence for dissemination.

“In today’s highly complex environment, such coordination is crucial. The existence of silos is a weakness in national security management,” he said.
