Negeri Sembilan recorded 205 open fire cases from March 1-25, a 159.5% spike blamed on hot weather and open burning activities.

SEREMBAN: A dramatic 159.5% surge in open fire cases has hit Negeri Sembilan, with authorities attributing the spike to extreme hot weather and rampant open burning.

The state Fire and Rescue Department recorded 205 cases from March 1 to 25, compared to just 79 incidents during the same period last year.

State director Nor Arifin Kamari said the extreme heat and strong winds have accelerated the spread of fires uncontrollably. He explained that the hot weather has also lowered soil moisture, creating tinder-dry conditions that fuel flames.

Increased activities during the festive season have further contributed to the problem. These include burning garbage for area clean-ups, sparks from firecrackers, and the careless disposal of lit cigarette butts.

The department’s operations centre and all stations are receiving numerous daily calls via the NG999 system to handle open fires across all districts. Current focus areas are Seremban, Teluk Kemang and Tampin.

Nor Arifin described the sudden increase as very worrying, with potential impacts on public safety, community health, and the environment. He called on all departments, agencies, and the community to jointly raise awareness about the effects of open burning.

“The public is advised not to carry out any open burning activities, especially in hot and dry weather conditions to reduce the risk of uncontrolled fires,” he said. He also urged people to avoid burning garbage openly.

The community is asked to ensure surrounding areas are clear of flammable materials. Any fire incidents should be reported immediately to authorities via the 999 emergency line or the nearest fire station.
