The direct Xiamen-Penang air link has generated over RM100 million for Penang’s economy, carrying 220,000 passengers since its launch last September

GEORGE TOWN: The direct flight route between Xiamen and Penang has injected over RM100 million into the local economy. Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai revealed the significant financial impact since the route’s launch on September 28, 2023.

He stated the route has carried 220,000 passengers as of March this year. Xiamen Airlines operated 1,526 round-trip flights during this period with an average load factor of 85%.

The economic benefits have spread across hospitality, transportation, and retail sectors. Wong highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the sister cities of George Town and Xiamen, which have lasted over 30 years.

He is currently leading a Penang delegation on a tourism promotion roadshow in Xiamen. Wong emphasised China remains a key tourism market for Penang, with Xiamen as an important gateway.

Flight frequency has increased from three times weekly to daily operations. This offers greater travel flexibility and serves passengers from across Fujian Province.

“The direct route not only attracts passengers from Xiamen but also serves travellers from surrounding cities such as Zhangzhou and Quanzhou,” he said. The state government will continue collaborating with Xiamen Airlines to strengthen cultural and tourism ties.

In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, Penang Global Tourism unveiled a new promotional video titled *In Love With Penang*. The campaign aims to position Penang as a premier destination for heritage and gastronomy.

It also seeks to highlight emerging sectors like medical, cruise, and wedding tourism. The tagline “Heartfelt Moments Begin Now” accompanies the new promotional push.
