Penang RTD issued 2,724 summonses in a 13-day festive operation, with private vehicles topping the list for traffic violations.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Road Transport Department issued 2,724 summonses during a 13-day special Hari Raya Aidilfitri operation.

Its director, Zulkifly Ismail, said 19,900 vehicles were inspected from March 13, with 1,492 found violating traffic rules.

The most common offence involved Motor Vehicle Licences, resulting in 576 summonses. This was followed by driving without a valid licence (541) and lack of insurance (468).

A total of 13 vehicles were also seized for various offences during the operation.

Private vehicles accounted for the highest number of cases at 1,860. Motorcycles were next with 500, followed by goods vehicles exceeding 7,500 kg (253), goods vehicles below 7,500 kg (83), and public service vehicles including buses (19).

Zulkifly said 245 RTD enforcement personnel were deployed for the operation. They conducted bus inspections at depots and audits at major terminals like Penang Sentral and Sungai Nibong.

Patrols were also carried out along five key corridors and at identified accident-prone areas.

Undercover operations saw officers posing as express bus passengers to detect driver misconduct. “Compliance was found to be good, with no offences detected,” he said.

Covert enforcement was further strengthened through personnel deployed along main roads and highways. They used unmarked vehicles to tail targeted vehicles and record offences.

Zulkifly was speaking after an advocacy programme at the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal. The programme was jointly organised by RTD and the Royal Malaysia Police, in collaboration with Konsortium Pelancongan Bumiputera Sdn Bhd.
