MMA urges stricter DUI enforcement and a victim fund after fatal Klang crash, highlighting the dangers of alcohol and drug driving

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has urged urgent action to tackle rising cases of driving under the influence (DUI) following a fatal motorcyclist crash in Klang.

“This tragedy is not isolated; it reflects a preventable and persistent public safety failure,” said the MMA. “Even one avoidable death is unacceptable.”

While official data show drink driving accounts for less than 0.5% of fatal road accidents, the MMA highlighted that a drunk driver is 13 times more likely to cause a crash, according to the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research. Risks increase further when alcohol and drugs are combined.

Although the amended Road Transport Act 2020 imposes heavier fines and jail terms, the MMA said victims’ families remain unsupported.

“Justice must not stop at punishment. Families need protection, support, and dignity,” the association added.

The MMA called for comprehensive reforms including year-round Ops Mabuk roadblocks, stricter blood alcohol limits, offender rehabilitation, and a dedicated DUI Victim Compensation Fund.

Extending condolences to the affected families, the MMA said, “DUI is a persistent national risk. Immediate action is required to prevent further loss of life.”
