The Ministry of Higher Education is tracking Malaysian students in West Asia for their safety, with a focus on those at US-linked universities following regional threats.
KUALA NERUS: The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) is actively monitoring the whereabouts of Malaysian students in West Asian countries amid the ongoing regional conflict.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir stated that the move is to ensure student safety and to facilitate their return to Malaysia if necessary.
He clarified that except for Saudi Arabia, which hosts a large number of Malaysian students, there are not many Malaysians at institutions linked to the United States in Gulf countries.
“Regardless of the numbers, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure Malaysians remain safe,” he told reporters after officiating an MOHE engagement programme at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA).
The monitoring follows a warning from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that universities linked to the US and Israel in the region are now considered “legitimate targets”.
According to a report by Anadolu Agency, the IRGC accused the US and Israel of repeatedly bombing universities in Iran, including the Iran University of Science and Technology in Tehran.
