Malaysian authorities probe 36 cases of fake news on social media about the global energy crisis, with six files sent for prosecution.

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has opened 36 investigation papers into the spread of fake news concerning the global energy crisis.

These cases involve content disseminated across social and digital media platforms.

A total of 22 individuals from various locations nationwide have been called to give their statements to assist the probes.

Six of these investigation papers have already been referred to the deputy public prosecutor for review and further legal action.

The investigations are being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

This section carries a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine or up to two years in prison, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC stated it takes seriously any misuse of platforms aimed at misleading the public with false information.

“Strict action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws,” the commission warned.

It also urged the public to use communication platforms responsibly.

The public should not misuse these facilities to upload or spread content that could disrupt social harmony and public order.
