Kulim council achieves Malaysia Book of Records honour by planting 700 Tecoma trees in one minute with 480 participants.
KULIM: The Kulim Kedah Municipal Council (MPKK) etched its name in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) after successfully planting 700 Tabebuia Pentaphylla, commonly known as Tecoma trees, within one minute under the category Most Tabebuia Pentaphylla Trees Planted in One Minute.
The achievement involved 480 participants comprising MPKK staff, councillors and strategic partners during the Let’s Plant Trees: ‘1 MPKK Staff Member, 1 Tree’ programme held at an open area in Kulim Hi-Tech Phase 4A near here this morning.
The MBR certificate was presented by MBR official Megat Faris Hussein Megat Muzaffar Shah to MPKK president Datuk Elmi Yusoff following the completion of the programme.
Elmi said the initiative was organised in conjunction with MPKK’s 25th Silver Jubilee celebration and reflected the council’s commitment to greening Kulim in line with its aspiration of becoming a low-carbon, environmentally friendly and liveable city.
“The selection of Kulim Hi-Tech Industrial Area Phase 4A as the venue also carried a symbolic message that industrial progress and environmental sustainability must advance hand in hand for the benefit of society and future generations,” Elmi said after officiating the event here today.
In his speech, Elmi said MPKK had evolved over the past 25 years from a local authority focused on municipal services and infrastructure into a leading driver of sustainable high-technology industrial urban development.
“The 25th anniversary of MPKK should not be seen merely as a milestone in numbers, but as a reflection of how far the council has progressed in creating sustainable development for future generations in Kulim
“This reflects MPKK’s commitment to driving urban growth that is not only progressive in terms of economy and infrastructure, but also balanced with environmental preservation,” he said.
He added that the planting of flowering shade trees in the Kulim Hi-Tech industrial area formed part of an urban rejuvenation effort aimed at transforming the industrial landscape into a greener, more comfortable and vibrant environment.
“The Tecoma tree, also known as the ‘Malaysian sakura’, not only enhances the beauty of the surroundings but also helps reduce ambient temperatures while acting as a natural carbon filter.
“Every tree planted is hoped to become a lasting contribution to public health, biodiversity and climate stability in Kulim,” he said.
Elmi said the programme also supported Kedah’s statewide campaign to plant 2.2 million trees.
“This initiative helps expand green coverage, mitigate the effects of climate change and enhance the state’s landscape.
“To MPKK staff, continue maintaining this momentum of excellence and let every tree planted inspire us to continue serving the community with greater value and benefit,” he said.
