ABIM calls for genuine anti-corruption reforms, not political threats, urging independence for MACC and transparent political financing laws

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) has urged the government and all parties to cease using corruption issues as a tool for political threats or bargaining.

Its president, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, said the movement takes a serious view of public confusion and anxiety as the issue is increasingly presented as rhetoric and propaganda.

He warned that this creates the impression anti-corruption is merely a slogan to consolidate power, rather than a comprehensive national reform.

“ABIM urges the government to ensure the anti-corruption agenda is revitalised through clear and bold institutional reforms, including ensuring the independence of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and expediting the separation of powers between the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor,” he said in a statement.

He said the government must also strengthen whistleblower protection and enact transparent political financing laws.

Enhancing the government procurement system to prevent cronyism is another critical measure, he added.

Ahmad Fahmi stressed that the public will not believe in anti-corruption efforts if actions are seen as inconsistent or selective.

He said corruption will not be toppled by slogans, but by consistent justice and firm institutional reforms.

The willingness to cut off the culture of cronyism is also essential, he concluded.
