Bangladesh’s newly elected MPs and cabinet members will be sworn in on Tuesday, with the BNP-led government set to formally take office.

DHAKA: The newly elected Members of Parliament in Bangladesh will take their oath on Tuesday morning. Cabinet members will be sworn in later the same afternoon.

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin will administer the oath to the MPs at 10am at Parliament. President Mohammed Shahabuddin will then swear in the cabinet members at 4pm at the Parliament’s South Plaza.

Following the MPs’ swearing-in, a meeting of the parliamentary board of the majority party will be held. This meeting will elect the party’s parliamentary leader.

That leader will then meet the President to formally seek appointment as head of government. The President will appoint the party leader as Prime Minister.

The new Prime Minister will subsequently select the members of the cabinet. The President will administer the oath first to the Prime Minister, followed by the ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers.

After the ceremony, the Cabinet Division will issue a notification allocating the portfolios. Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid said preparations for the event are underway.

He added that around 1,000 guests are expected to be invited to the ceremony. The 13th national election was held on Thursday.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 209 parliamentary seats in that election. – Bernama-UNB
