Barcelona’s Gavi is set to return from a long-term knee injury against Sevilla, offering a major boost to the La Liga leaders’ midfield.
BARCELONA midfielder Gavi is available for selection against Sevilla this weekend after a lengthy injury absence.
Coach Hansi Flick confirmed the 21-year-old Spain international is ready to return, potentially from the bench, after suffering a severe knee injury in August.
“He’s available, I’m happy, maybe he’s also available for some minutes, it’s good to have him back and you can see in the training his dynamic,” Flick told reporters.
The tenacious midfielder, who also missed most of the 2023/24 season with another knee problem, offers an intensity Barcelona have lacked at times.
Flick praised Gavi’s attitude but stressed the need for caution in his comeback.
“I like what I see, but also we have to take care of him,” the coach said, adding, “I love his intention to play, to give everything for this club and this team.”
Barcelona hold a four-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga ahead of the weekend fixtures.
Flick was more guarded regarding the potential involvement of teenage star Lamine Yamal against Sevilla.
“We will see,” he said when asked if the winger might be rested.
The Catalans face Newcastle United in the Champions League on Wednesday following their domestic clash.
