National Unity Minister says strengthening history education via the National Education Blueprint is crucial for fostering civic awareness and patriotism among youth.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s move to restore the dignity of the nation’s history by strengthening history education through the National Education Blueprint (RPN) has been described as timely.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the initiative aims to help young people grasp the true meaning of independence and their civic duties.

He said it not only deepens knowledge but also promotes civic awareness and a sense of patriotism.

“With a strong grasp of history, today’s generation will be more focused, principled, and grounded in national identity as they tackle current challenges and shape the nation’s future,” he said in a statement.

The statement was issued in conjunction with the anniversary of the announcement of the Federation of Malaya’s independence.

Aaron reflected that February 20, 1956, marked the day the late first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, announced independence after returning from the Merdeka Mission in London.

He said the historic event showed independence was won through wise negotiations, tolerance, sacrifice, and multi-ethnic unity.

“February 20, 1956, is more than just a date in the nation’s history. It marks the rise of a nation, uniting the hopes of its people and beginning the journey to true independence,” he said.

Aaron added that his ministry set up the National Historians Council last year to pool expertise and preserve accurate historical narratives.

He said the ministry, through the National Archives and the Department of Museums, will continue to preserve, document, and promote history to safeguard the nation’s heritage.

These initiatives are ongoing efforts to foster unity grounded in historical awareness and national values.

“History is the foundation of unity, and unity is the safeguard of the nation’s future,” he said.

Aaron urged the public to reflect on history and honour the sacrifices of the nation’s leaders.

“Let us renew our commitment to building a united, harmonious, and resilient Malaysia for current and future generations,” he said.
