PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has given the green light for the development of Pulau Carey Port, appointing the Selangor state government as lead developer in a move expected to transform the state’s economic landscape and establish Malaysia’s third major port at Port Klang.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the Transport Ministry will act as the regulatory body to ensure the project is implemented efficiently and in an orderly manner.
He said that the Selangor government will form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in partnership with private companies to secure investment for the construction and operation of the port.
“This is a long-term, strategic infrastructure project that demonstrates the government’s commitment to national development, even amid global geopolitical challenges,” Loke said at the Ministry’s monthly assembly and Ihya Ramadan program today.
He also said that while the Cabinet has approved measures to manage government spending, particularly discretionary expenses, development projects and socio-economic initiatives will continue unaffected.
“We are prioritising expenditure on initiatives with the greatest impact for the people.
“Projects, aid programs, and other essential government initiatives will continue as planned,” Loke said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously called for the port’s development to be fast-tracked, noting that the project has long been planned and should no longer be delayed.
Last year, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Amirudin Shari said the state government had earmarked 1,699.68 hectares on Pulau Carey for the port.
This comprises 1,011.71 hectares of seabed land managed by the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) and 687.96 hectares of coastal land owned by Yayasan Selangor.
Amirudin added that the state government will take an active role in both developing and overseeing the project, which is expected to serve as a major driver of Selangor’s economic growth over the next 20 to 30 years.
