Works Minister Alexander Nanta says the RM2.5 billion project to widen roads and build a new loop in Cameron Highlands is 38% complete and on track for a 2028 finish
KUALA LUMPUR: A major infrastructure project to alleviate severe traffic congestion in Cameron Highlands is progressing on schedule for completion in February 2028.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the initiative, which involves upgrading Jalan Brinchang and constructing a new loop at Kea Farm, has achieved 38% physical progress.
The project’s main scope includes widening a one-kilometre stretch of Federal Road FT59 from the McDonald’s Roundabout to the Brinchang intersection from two lanes to four.
It also involves building a new three-kilometre one-way loop at Kea Farm.
Nanta said the project is being implemented under the Second Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan.
“Following a traffic congestion study conducted by the ministry in September 2020, the government also approved the continuation of the project under RP3 of 12MP, which includes the construction of the Tanah Rata bypass,” he told the Dewan Negara.
He was responding to a question from Senator Datuk Leong Ngah Ngah on steps to resolve persistent traffic congestion in the highland resort area.
The next phase will involve upgrading Federal Roads FT59 and FT434, covering an estimated total length of 10 kilometres.
The Letter of Acceptance was issued to the contractor on Feb 11, with site possession beginning on Feb 16.
Nanta added that the ministry is studying the installation of digital signage at strategic locations like Simpang Pulai.
This would provide real-time travel information to Cameron Highlands, enabling motorists to better plan their journeys.
On proposals to build flyovers and tunnels to minimise disruption to plantation areas, he said the ministry is prepared to evaluate such suggestions.
He stressed that all development initiatives would be implemented responsibly.
“This is to ensure a balance between infrastructure development and environmental sustainability in the highland area,” Nanta said.
