Canada seeks to expand cooperation with Sarawak in sustainable mining, energy development, and emerging industries like aerospace and agriculture.

KUCHING: Canada is exploring avenues to expand cooperation with Sarawak, focusing on sustainable mining, energy development, and emerging industries.

Canadian High Commissioner to Malaysia Jodi Rae Robinson highlighted these areas following a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Discussions centred on how Canadian expertise could support the state’s development priorities.

A key topic was Canada’s “Towards Sustainable Mining” framework, which Malaysia is reviewing for its critical mineral strategy.

Robinson noted Sarawak’s strong emphasis on environmentally responsible mining.

“I know the Premier has very strong feelings about ensuring that any mining is environmentally sustainable,” she told reporters.

She added the question is how Canada can support Sarawak in developing its mining industry responsibly.

Robinson’s visit aimed to strengthen engagement between Canadian companies and the Sarawak government.

She cited Canadian expertise in sectors aligning with Sarawak’s priorities, including energy, agriculture, and aerospace.

Another discussion point was maximising Sarawak’s abundant power resources within its expanding energy sector.

Robinson also praised Sarawak’s push into hydrogen energy, calling it a promising part of the global clean energy transition.

“Canada also has its own industry for hydrogen. What Sarawak has been doing is incredible,” she said.

She expressed being impressed by the state’s industrial development and the government’s strategic vision on each visit.
