BEIJING: China confirmed on Wednesday that it is in communication with the United States regarding a postponed visit by former President Donald Trump, though officials declined to provide a specific timeframe for the rescheduled trip.

Foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated that both nations would continue to maintain dialogue concerning the visit, which was originally slated to begin on March 31.

The highly anticipated trip, months in the making, has been disrupted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to official statements.

Trump said on Tuesday that the high-stakes diplomatic mission would likely take place in “five or six weeks,” suggesting a new timeline.

He had previously indicated on Sunday that the timing could hinge on whether China assists in efforts to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively closed in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes.

Trump later confirmed the delay a day later, citing instead the need to remain in the United States due to the war situation.

China has followed its standard diplomatic practice by never publicly confirming any specific date for the planned visit.
