KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to hold discussions with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Election Commission (EC) to coordinate enforcement measures against the spread of false information ahead of the 17th Sabah state election.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said complaints have already been received regarding the circulation of fake photos and posters of election candidates, even though the official election period is only expected to begin in November.
“Even now, we are receiving complaints about fake pictures and posters of candidates being circulated. We know the EC can only take action during the election period, but if false information continues to spread for too long, it can cause many problems. We are concerned that fake news and misinformation could influence voter behaviour.
“Therefore, firm action must be taken — we will ensure that the EC and PDRM, not for the benefit of any political party, have a special lane for swift action, particularly involving the social media platforms most frequently used,” he told reporters after officiating the ‘2025 Anak Pantai’ SPM Excellence Seminar at Mahsa Avenue International College Friday.
Fahmi said a meeting with social media companies would also be held next week to ensure prompt action is taken on false or misleading content, particularly that which could compromise the safety and integrity of the election process.
He stressed that the initiative is not politically motivated but rather aimed at ensuring the election runs smoothly and fairly for all parties.
On the seminar, Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai MP, said the programme involved 115 students from nine schools in the constituency, organised in collaboration with Arus Anak Muda, Federal Territory Youth Assembly, Anak Pantai, Mahsa University and Find My Uni.
He said the seminar was designed to provide guidance, motivation and inspiration to students sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination this year.
“The objective is to prepare them not only academically, but also mentally and emotionally, to develop well-rounded students who are disciplined, competitive and resilient,” he said.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said his ministry plans to introduce industry exposure and internship opportunities for the students after completing their SPM examinations.
He said the initiative aims to provide students from the People’s Housing Project (PPR) areas and local communities with a better understanding of the real-world working environment.
“I am working with several companies in Lembah Pantai to organise industrial visits and internship placements for these students while they await their exam results.
“Many recognise companies such as Touch ‘n Go and others based in Lembah Pantai, but they have never actually seen or experienced the working environment inside.
“My hope is that the opportunity will inspire and motivate them,” he said. — Bernama
